The Gym Mindset: Why Most People Fail to Lose Weight

I went to the gym for two years. I showed up almost five days a week, but if I’m being honest, I never really liked being there. Despite all that time spent lifting weights and moving my body, I didn't see the weight loss I expected. It made me wonder: Why do so many of us exercise every day and still see no results?


It’s Not Just About the Workout

For a long time, I blamed the technical things. I wasn't taking protein powder, and I wasn't managing my meals properly. While those are important, I realized the real problem was much deeper—it was my mindset.

I had this deep-seated belief that my stubborn fat would never burn. I told myself that "fat men don't become handsome" and that I would stay this way forever. Because I didn't believe change was possible, I never truly focused or tried my best.

Action Builds Identity

I’ve learned that knowing something isn't the same as believing it. You only start to believe in a new version of yourself through action.

  • The 30-Day Rule: If you do something every single day for a month, you start to develop a new identity.
  • Becoming "That Person": Once you see yourself as a "health-conscious person," you stop looking for excuses.
  • Finding the Time: When a habit becomes part of who you are, you will always find the time for it, even if it's two or three hours a day.

The "Excuse" Trap

When you don't have that identity, your brain becomes an expert at finding excuses. I’ve used them all: the weather isn't right, I'm feeling hungry, I have low energy, or it’s a festival day. There are a million reasons not to go if you don't believe in the result.

"Just writing down 'I can do this' isn't enough. You have to write it down and then follow it with action. Only then does your subconscious mind start to believe."

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s losing weight or learning a new language, the secret is the same: stop looking for excuses and start building an identity through action. It’s hard to start, but once you stop identifying with your old self, the results will finally come.
